What’s worse than waking up feeling like a rat died in your mouth and with a headache more painful than childbirth? With a little gentle care and attention, you can look like you didn’t try to snog your work colleague or take your clothes off on the dance floor. Beauty editor Amy Durrant gives her advice on how to pretend you stayed in and had an early night…

The first rule of looking fresh the morning after is preparation on the night itself and it is resisting the temptation to fall into to bed with make-up on. So, before you go out, place a 2ltr bottle of mineral water next to your bed and put your cleanser and tissues on your pillow. Even if the room is spinning, you’ll at least take some make-up off.

You need a cleanser that removes both eye makeup and foundation with little effort and which can be wiped off with a tissue (probably while you’re sitting in bed). Pond’s Cold Cream, £3.25 from Boots, is ideal and it’s great for removing even waterproof mascara without rubbing.

You can sleep with the Pond’s residue on your face and it will keep in moisture overnight. Drink at least a pint of water before you go to sleep. This will stop you from feeling rough in the morning as well as helping you to look more hydrated. Alcohol has a tendency to make you dream about drinking water and you can wake up in the night with a heavy thirst. Your bottle of water is something you’ll be glad of in the middle of the night.

The next morning you need to cleanse again and this time easy exfoliation is what you need when you don’t feel too good. Refine & Polish Miracle Balm, £57, from Aurelia Skincare has Bio organic ingredients (rice bran beads) and is gentle enough for sensitive skin. You can use it as an exfoliant or, if you’re so hungover you can’t execute a scrubbing motion, as a mask. You can sit and stare at the wall for 10 minutes while it does its magic. It leaves you looking and feeling clean. Rinse alternately in hot and cold water (to exercise your pores) and finish with cold.

Pat your face dry and here comes the real pallor killer if you’ve got pale skin: apply a layer of instant fake tan, such as St Tropez Instant Self Tan, £8, from BeautyBay. Leave it to sink in while you have your breakfast and then apply a layer of moisturiser. We like Dr. Sebagh Luminous Glow, £72 for 50ml, from SpaceNK. It gives a visible brightness. If you’ve got dark skin, skip the fake tan and go straight for the moisturiser.

When it’s soaked in it’s time to apply your make up. Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow! brightening makeup by BeneFit. Does what it says on the tin and it has an SPF 25 sunscreen which is always a bonus. It’s £30.00 for 30ml.

Get rid of the wine bags under your eyes with Benefit Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer, £15 for 3.5g, again from BeneFit. Really good for concealing dark circles. Apply the rest of your make-up and marvel at how healthy you look! Then promise yourself you’re never drinking again.

No one will ever guess that you ever went to that party. The peope who saw you there won’t remember.
